for General Audiences: vanguard student on tsunami frontline
Posted by: Bumble on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 01:36 AM EST (40337 Reads)
Prayer Requests Dear friends..

I wish I could write a personal response to each of you…but unfortunately time does not permit.

I want to start by saying the experience we had in the last days was by far the most intense display of God's power, provision and grace. Your prayers were felt in a way I’ve never experienced before thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We plugged in with the U.N. in Jakarta…and then the Governor of Jakarta, and told them we were volunteers from the states with medical training and a grip load of medical supplies and water purification equipment.
We then hopped a flight to Medan, and then Connected with the military who flew us in to ground zero...

Note: Vanguard University student Scott McAlvany is currently ministering to those directly affected by the tsunami. He was one of the first Americans on the scene in Banda Aceh. He is a senior business major and spends most of his breaks from school working at an orphanage in Bali. He was there when the tsunami hit, and rushed to Banda Aceh, the hardest hit area, to help.

Above is his e-mail update. The ellipses are his and nothing has been cut. Be forewarned: it contains extremely graphic information about his work in the emergency hospital there. Please continue to pray for him as he continues to help tsunami victims until he returns home on January 18.

for General Audiences: "If You Had Been Here..."

"If You Had Been Here..."

1.

1) {Introduction}

If you have seen the news, you would recognize this man and his family [show picture]. A couple of days ago, Jimmie Wallet went out for ice cream, and when he got back, his wife and three of his four daughters were gone. They were killed in a mudslide.

You also have seen the news. Three weeks ago, the Asian tsunami wiped out people from 11 countries. The death toll now is exceeding 150,000. When the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan flew over a remote of Indonesia, still unreachable by the rescuers at the time, he was shaken by what he saw, "I must admit, I have never seen such utter destruction, mile after mile, "And you wonder, where are the people, what happened to them?”[i]

Two days after the powerful tsunami, the Wall Street Journal printed the following: “...thousands people killed by the tidal wave, so far. Who are they? What are their names? How did they love and hate? Where was God when this happened? "God saved me, but why?" a nine-year old boy named Subhani asked a reporter. He had just watched his mother and elder sister drown in front of him as he looked on, helpless; six months ago, the little boy had lost his father...”[ii]

Where is God in the midst of all this? We scream out this question in the last few weeks. As we continue our study through the book of John in chapter 11, let’s see if there is any answer according to God’s Word.

Note: The message on Sunday Jan. 16, 2005 was posted here for further study/review/discussion

Activities and Events Calendar For directions, go to
http://wc04.vaynet.us/
and click on the reg brochure on the top left side of the website.

Stay tune for ride information (who's driving, where to meet, when to meet, etc. etc.)

It would help if you would reply to this post indicating if you can drive, how many empty spots you still have in your car if you're driving, or if you need a ride.

Why Nick and I buried Jesus?

Shalom! Good morning,

My name is Joseph, (but according to your culture, you can call me Joe). I am from Arimathea, a region in the Northwest of Jerusalem [1]. I am a nobleman among the seventy members of the Sanhedrin of Jerusalem, (or Ruling Council in your term). I am here to debrief you about the incident of Yeshua, (or Jesus in your term), who was from Nazareth...

  for General Audiences: Invalid Grace

Invalid Grace

'Who is this fellow?' The man who was healed had no idea who it was...
- John 5:12,13

I want to tell you a story of God’s Pervasive Grace; it’s a story of His Personalized Grace.

As with any story, it started out with the setting: “Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.”

If you visit St. Anne’s Church in Jerusalem, they will show you the deep excavation that has revealed the ancient Pool of Bethesda. The Hebrew name Bethesda has been spelled various ways and given differing meanings. Some say it means “house of mercy” or “house of grace,” but others say it means “place of the two outpourings.” There is historical and archeological evidence that two adjacent pools of water served this area in ancient times.
